E-bike maintenance: what's different from a regular bike
An e-bike is still a bicycle, and most of what applies to regular bike maintenance applies to e-bikes too. But the motor assistance means the drivetrain works harder, the battery needs specific care, and there are a few wet-weather considerations that don't apply to unpowered bikes.
Drivetrain wear happens faster
The motor torque on a mid-drive e-bike puts significantly more stress on the chain and cassette than pedalling alone. On a Bosch Performance Line motor, for example, the chain can wear out in 1,500-2,000km under heavy use. Roughly half the life you'd expect on a regular bike. Checking chain wear every 500km is not excessive.
We see a lot of e-bikes come in with worn cassettes that the owner didn't know were worn because the motor was masking the skipping. Once the battery runs low and the assist drops off, the drivetrain suddenly feels terrible. Regular chain checks prevent this.
Battery care in a Vancouver climate
Lithium batteries don't like being stored fully charged or fully empty for long periods. If you're not riding for more than a week, store the battery at around 50-60% charge. In winter, bring the battery inside. Cold temperatures reduce capacity temporarily and, over many cycles, can accelerate long-term degradation.
Vancouver's rain is generally fine for IP-rated e-bike systems, but avoid pressure washing the motor or battery connections. A damp cloth is enough. After a very wet ride, leave the battery port cover open for an hour to let any moisture evaporate.
When to bring it in for a service
We recommend a full drivetrain service every 1,500km for e-bikes used regularly in the city. That includes chain replacement, cassette inspection, brake pad check, and a look at the motor mount bolts, which can loosen over time from vibration. Battery health checks are worth doing annually. We can read the battery's cycle count and remaining capacity using diagnostic software for Bosch and Shimano Steps systems.
If your e-bike hasn't been in for a service since you bought it, it's probably due. Bring it in and we'll do a quick assessment before recommending anything.
